Birth of The Album
The birth of this album came in 2 stages. The first stage being the completion of As Itself in 2020. As Itself was a complete expression of my abilities to produce an experimental album at the time. While making that album had completely exhausted me, at that point I very clearly knew what I wanted for the next release. In September 2020 I had decided that I wanted to completely overhaul production quality, then make an album that still pushes boundaries, but pushes the boundaries of dance music. The second phase came a few months later, after making a playlist involving specific songs by Caribou, Vegyn, Rei Harakami. Each of these songs had the ability to be deeply complex songs when given the space, while remaining also perfect for atmosphere and driving. There was something spiritual and cyclical to this sound, which provided a strong backbone to what I would come to call Gunpowder Memory. Working on music became an essential emotional release, especially during the dark hours of winter. By summer of 2022, I had carefully refined my tracks and recording sessions into the album I present on this day, September 1st 2022. Of course I have much much more to say about this album, and I wish to share it all with you, but this is pretty much the origin story.

First Listen
My first time listening to Gunpowder Memory all the way through was on Blood Alley in rural Missouri on a rainy day in March, on my way to see the 100 acre wood rally. A national event where cars race through some farmers gravel backroad and compete for the fastest time. Sitting at a gas station in the rain while I caught up on sleep, trying to meet up with my friend without cell service, seemed fitting to the sounds and spaces of Gunpowder Memory on that day.
